The LTO1 backup tape was released in September 2000. The HP lto-1 backup tape has 100 GB native capacity and compressed rate of 200 GB. The HP lto1 backup tape cartridge has a transfer rate of up to 15 MB/s. It uses RLL 1,7 ( Run length limited ) The HP C7971a backup storage tape thickness is 8.9 μm, and tape length is 609 m. HP lto1 tape has 384 tracks. The wraps per band are 12 and linear density (bits/mm) is 4880. Bit density is low, compared to second and third generations.

HP lto1 tape C7971a cartridges have a quick to market design and are made by “easy” technology. The purpose was that the LTO magnetic tape would gain a foothold in the linear magnetic tape market. The maximum capacity is 100 GB and it uses the same data compression technique as used in AIT tape. HP lto Ultrium is one of the most popular forms of backup tape and as it is pretty much a drop in replacement for dlt, therefore it is easy for you to upgrade your tape library from DLT to LTO 1 Ultrium format.

SAIT1 was the highest capacity tape cartridge from 2003 to 2006 which was displaced by DLT-S4 800 GB. SAIT 1 is pre-labelled cartridge allowing the cartridge to be used in tape automation systems. SAIT-i has massive storage capacity of up to 1.3TB compressed (500GB native). It has Fast 30MB/sec native transfer rate provided by Helical Scanning System. sait-1 provides high density recording and reliability with AME Advanced Metal Evaporated tape.

The additional security features in Sony LTO4 tape drive

It is permissible within the Sony LTO4 format to read raw data blocks from an encrypted tape, but without the key the data would simply remain as cipher text and make no sense. However, access to raw data does make it possible to mount a brute force attack by attempting to decode the data using large amounts of computer power and a sequence of computer generated keys. To prevent this from happening, the Sony LTO-4 tape drive is a security setting in the SPOUT SCSI command which controls raw reads of the data after it has been written to tape, by default raw reads are prevented and any attempt at a raw read returns a check condition. By default the Ultrium Sony LTO 4 Tape Drives will report an error if a block of data is written with external mode set, which is done by way of the SPOUT SCSI command. The Sony LTO4 Tape Drive prevents multiple attempts to read data with the incorrect key set. After ten attempts the drive will return a check condition until a new key is written or the drive is reset. This would make it a slow process to try out multiple keys against a block of data.

Ultrium LTO4 Backup Tape Drive encryption

The LTO-4 format has the capability to encrypt/decrypt data within the tape drive hardware. The LTO 4 ultrium backup tape does not require the software based encryption and its inherent performance overheads. The LTO-4 Ultrium Tape Drive allows data to be encrypted following compression maintaining optimum storage efficiency. Encryption is a standard part of the Ultrium LTO4 format which requires that all drives must be encryption aware. All lto 4 tape media drives from any vendor will return the appropriate sense codes when presented with an encrypted lto4 backup cartridge tape.

The ultrium lto-4 backup tape drive can read the LTO2 format backup tapes and on other hand, reads and writes LTO3 backup format tapes. However, encryption is not a supported feature of either the lto-3 or lto-2 backup tape format or drives.
